What I do
Research
- reading journal articles and working papers to keep up with current research;
- attending research seminars and give comments, interacting with visiting researchers;
- writing grant proposals to finance research and research staff;
- doing research (ideas, theory, data/experiments, programming, recruiting, running sessions, analysis, documentation);
- learning about new research and analysis methods;
- writing papers, revising, responding to reviews, and publishing;
- traveling to other universities to collaborate, meeting collaborators virtually;
Outreach and communication
- traveling to conferences to give presentations;
- giving invited seminar talks;
- communicating outside academia through outreach events, interviews, and writing;
- advising government agencies and companies;
Academic service and community
- organizing research seminars, inviting external speakers and visitors;
- organizing conferences and workshops;
- peer-reviewing papers and grants (e.g., EU or other organizations);
- editing journals and reviewing data/replication materials;
- serving on expert panels, boards, and committees;
Teaching and training
- teaching classes, preparing slides, grading;
- designing courses and programs;
- supervising theses;
- supervising PhD students; PhD committees; recommendation letters;
Software
- developing research software and providing support;
Managing and administrating
- managing institutions (competence center, institute) and grants/budgets;
- negotiating resources;
- hiring people, writing hiring reports;
- managing people, leading team meetings;
- writing institutional reports; developing policies;
- participating in university self-administration;
- serving on internal committees; professional societies/organizations;
And yes…
Work in academia is never done; it never ends. There is always another thing to do.
